How dates work in calendars

Our modern Gregorian calendar was introduced by Pope Gregory XIII in 1582 to correct a 10-day drift that had accumulated in the older Julian calendar. The key innovation was the leap year rule: a year is a leap year if divisible by 4, unless it's divisible by 100 — but years divisible by 400 are still leap years.

This means:
- 2024 is a leap year (divisible by 4)
- 2100 is NOT a leap year (divisible by 100 but not 400)
- 2000 WAS a leap year (divisible by 400)
