About the SAT (SAT)
High school juniors and seniors applying to US colleges. About 1.7 million students take the SAT each year. Many universities went test-optional during 2020-2023; competitive schools (Ivies, MIT, Caltech) reinstated SAT requirements in 2024-2025.
The SAT became fully digital in March 2024. The new digital SAT is 2 hours 14 minutes (down from 3 hours), uses adaptive testing (the second module of each section adjusts difficulty based on first-module performance), and tests Reading & Writing + Math.
SATscoring & score release
Scoring: Scores range 400-1600. The Reading & Writing section is 200-800; Math is 200-800. The 25th percentile for top-30 universities is around 1450-1500. Median nationally is around 1050.
Score release: Digital SAT scores release within 2-7 days of the test (much faster than the old paper test's 2-3 week window). Scores are sent to up to 4 colleges free if requested at registration.
How to register for the SAT
Register through the College Board website. Standard registration closes about 4 weeks before the test date. Late registration is available with a $30 late fee until about 2 weeks before.
Recent SAT changes
The most significant change in SAT history: paper SAT discontinued in March 2024, replaced by a fully digital adaptive format using the Bluebook app on personal or school-provided devices.

Most students prepare 3-6 months. Khan Academy offers free official SAT prep partnered with College Board. Score improvement of 100-200 points with 80-100 hours of focused study is typical.
