About the Law School Admission Test (LSAT)
Applicants to US/Canadian law schools (JD programs). About 130,000 take the LSAT annually. Required by all ABA-accredited law schools, though some now also accept the GRE.
LSAT is 2 hours 35 minutes total (3 hours with breaks). Four 35-minute sections: Logical Reasoning (×2), Reading Comprehension, and one unscored experimental section. Plus a 35-minute LSAT Writing essay completed separately online.
LSATscoring & score release
Scoring: Scaled score 120-180. Median is 152. Top-14 ("T14") law schools typically expect 168+. The LSAT removed the Logic Games section in August 2024, replaced with a second Logical Reasoning section.
Score release: Scores release approximately 3 weeks after the test. LSAC sends an email when scores are ready.
How to register for the LSAT
Register through LSAC. LSAT is offered ~9 times per year. Register 3-5 months ahead for popular dates. Late registration available with a $125 fee.
Recent LSAT changes
August 2024: Logic Games (Analytical Reasoning) section removed, replaced with a second Logical Reasoning section. This was the biggest LSAT change in decades — Logic Games had been the most distinctive (and feared) part of the test.
LSAT preparation timeline
3-6 months is standard. The LSAT rewards systematic preparation — even strong students start at 145-155 cold and need 200-300 hours to hit 165+. PowerScore Bibles, 7Sage, Khan Academy LSAT (free) are top resources.
