About the GRE timer
The new short GRE (since September 2023) is 1h 58m — Verbal 40 min, Quant 47 min, Writing 30 min. Section-level adaptive (second Verbal/Quant adjusts to first).
Benefits
- ·Half the length of the old GRE (was 3h 45m)
- ·Faster score turnaround (8-10 days)
- ·No experimental section
- ·Practice exact format used in real test
- ·Standard for graduate school applications
How it works
Analytical Writing 30 min (one essay only — old GRE had two). Then 2 sections of Verbal (40 min total) and 2 sections of Quant (47 min total). Section-level adaptive between modules.
September 2023 was the biggest GRE format change since 2011. Removed Analytical Writing 'Argument' essay (now just one Issue essay), removed unscored research section, faster score release. Test now ~half the length.
Who uses the GRE timer
Graduate school applicants (master's, PhD, MBA), international students applying to US/Canadian programs.
