Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend January 17-19, 2026 (Saturday-Monday)

Memorial Day weekend May 23-25, 2026 (Saturday-Monday)

The unofficial start of summer. Beach towns, national parks, and lakes are popular. Expect crowds but also perfect late-spring weather in most of the US.

Independence Day weekend July 3-5, 2026 (Friday-Sunday)

July 4th falls on a Saturday, giving you a natural 3-day weekend without using PTO. BBQs, fireworks, and summer road trips.

Labor Day weekend September 5-7, 2026 (Saturday-Monday)

The last hurrah of summer. Great for end-of-season beach trips, camping, or exploring cities before fall crowds arrive.

Columbus Day / Indigenous Peoples' Day weekend October 10-12, 2026 (Saturday-Monday)

Peak fall foliage in New England and the mid-Atlantic. One of the most underrated travel weekends — lower demand, beautiful scenery.

Veterans Day weekend November 11, 2026 (Wednesday)

Veterans Day falls mid-week, which is tricky for travel. Take Thursday and Friday off to create a 5-day weekend, or Monday and Tuesday for the same effect.

Thanksgiving weekend November 26-29, 2026 (Thursday-Sunday)

Already a 4-day weekend for most people. Traditionally spent with family, but increasingly popular for short trips starting on Friday.

Christmas weekend December 25-27, 2026 (Friday-Sunday)

Christmas falls on Friday, creating a natural 3-day weekend. Perfect for family visits or a post-holiday ski trip.

New Year's weekend January 1-3, 2027 (Friday-Sunday)

PTO maximization strategies

The bridge technique

When a holiday falls on Tuesday or Thursday, take one PTO day to "bridge" to the weekend and create a 4-day weekend. This is the highest-value use of PTO.

In 2026, the best bridge opportunity is Veterans Day (Wednesday, November 11) — take Thursday and Friday off for a 5-day weekend.

The bookend technique

Attach PTO days to both sides of a long weekend. Take Friday before and Tuesday after Memorial Day weekend, and you get a 5-day trip (Saturday through Wednesday) using only 2 PTO days.

The strategic week

If you have a full week of PTO, attach it to a long weekend. Take the week before Labor Day off, and you get 9 consecutive days off using only 4-5 PTO days.

Best destinations by season

Winter (MLK Day, Presidents' Day): Palm Springs, Sedona, Puerto Rico, ski resorts in Colorado or Utah.

Spring (Memorial Day): National parks before summer crowds, coastal Carolina, Nashville, Austin.

Summer (July 4th): Lake houses, Cape Cod, Pacific Northwest, Yellowstone.

Fall (Columbus Day, Veterans Day): Vermont, Smoky Mountains, wine country in Napa or Finger Lakes.

Booking tips for long weekends

Book 6-8 weeks ahead for the best prices on flights. Long weekends have predictable demand, so airlines raise prices as the date approaches.

Consider alternate airports. A 30-minute drive to a smaller airport can save hundreds on popular travel weekends.

Flexibility is key. Flying out Thursday instead of Friday (for a Monday holiday) often costs 30-40% less.
