Fajr prayer time: when it starts and why it changes daily

Fajr is the first of the five daily Islamic prayers, performed before sunrise when the first light of dawn appears on the horizon. For millions of Muslims, setting an alarm for Fajr is a daily practice — but the time changes every single day.

When Does Fajr Start?

Fajr begins at "true dawn" (al-fajr al-sadiq) — the moment a thin horizontal line of light appears across the eastern horizon. Astronomically, this occurs when the sun is a specific number of degrees below the horizon.

The exact angle depends on the calculation method:
- ISNA: 15° below the horizon
- MWL: 18° below the horizon
- Egyptian: 19.5° below the horizon

At 15° (ISNA), Fajr starts roughly 75-90 minutes before sunrise in most US cities. At 18° (MWL), it starts even earlier — about 90-110 minutes before sunrise.

Why Fajr Time Changes Daily

The sun's path across the sky shifts throughout the year due to Earth's axial tilt (23.5°). This means:

  • In summer, the sun rises earlier and sets later. Fajr can be as early as 3:30 AM in northern cities like Seattle or Minneapolis.
  • In winter, the sun rises later. Fajr shifts to 5:30-6:00 AM in the same cities.
  • Near the equator, Fajr time stays relatively stable year-round.

The change is gradual — usually just 1-2 minutes per day — but over weeks and months, it adds up significantly.

Fajr by City

Here are typical Fajr time ranges for popular US cities throughout the year:

  • New York: ~3:45 AM (June) to ~5:50 AM (December)
  • Chicago: ~3:30 AM (June) to ~5:40 AM (December)
  • Houston: ~4:30 AM (June) to ~5:45 AM (December)
  • Los Angeles: ~4:00 AM (June) to ~5:30 AM (December)
  • Dearborn: ~3:30 AM (June) to ~5:50 AM (December)

Tips for Waking Up for Fajr

  1. Check tomorrow's Fajr time the night before using our prayer times tool. Set your alarm accordingly.
  2. Sleep early — the simplest way to make Fajr easier is getting enough sleep.
  3. Place your alarm across the room so you have to physically get up to turn it off.
  4. Have a routine — keep wudu supplies ready and your prayer area prepared.
  5. Use a gradual alarm — some alarm apps simulate sunrise with increasing light.

The Importance of Fajr

Fajr is often considered the most rewarding prayer precisely because it requires effort. Praying Fajr in congregation at the mosque carries special merit in Islamic tradition. The two rak'ahs (units) of Fajr sunnah prayer are described as "better than the world and everything in it."

The Fajr window ends at sunrise, so it's important to check both times. You can see today's exact Fajr and sunrise times for your city on our prayer times page.
